The Naked Truth - late summer 1970

At the end of an underway watch it is customary for the duty officer to make a tour of the boat before going off watch. This particular day it was very hot in the engine rooms (as usual) and the forward engine room watch (Morgan) had removed his shoes to "cool his heels" so to speak.

As the duty officer passed through, on his way to the After Torpedo Room, he told Morgan, "I don't care if you stand the watch naked.... you need to wear your shoes!"

A few minutes later the officer came back on his way to the control room. As he passed Morgan he just shook his head, kept his eyes down and made a silent exit. There Morgan sat... naked as a jaybird except for the shoes that were on his feet.

Pride In Our Work

We had reason to be proud coming off our North Atlantic Run in the fall of 1970. Our boat (The ODAX SS-484) had earned the coveted "E".  As we returned to port the topside had been made presentable to show our pride. The sail had been repainted, ships numbers and that big white "E" added. It really looked great. One of my shipmates was so proud that he had signed his work. At the bottom aft part of the sail, in small white script lettering, were the words: "Sail by Dupers". (Thanks Dupree, for your humor that made most days special.)
